Max Burger, MD, PhD

Professor Burger is Vice-Chairman of the Novartis Science Board, which is responsible for the evaluation of Novartis global research and reports directly to the Chairman of the BoD of Novartis. He is the former director of the Friedrich Miescher Institute in Basel and a member of multiple boards of directors and scientific advisory boards. These include the Bundesministerium für Forschung und Technologie (BMFT); the Helmholtz Society (HGF); the Pasteur Institute in Paris; and the Roche Research Foundation. Formerly, Dr Burger was professor of Biochemistry at Princeton University and at the Biozentrum Basel for many years. Dr Burger is a long-time editor of several scientific journals in biochemistry and cancer research and has received many awards and honorary memberships for his scientific achievements.

Shahzad Malik, MD

Dr Malik joined Advent where he is a General Partner in 1999 with a strong grounding in science and clinical medicine.
Prior to joining Advent he spent six years practising medicine, before joining the London office of management consultants McKinsey & Company where he served international clients in the Healthcare and Investment Banking sectors.
During his time with Advent Dr Malik has been actively involved with numerous investments in Europe and the United States in the biopharmaceutical and medical device arenas. He gained an MA from Oxford University, and an MD from Cambridge University. He subsequently specialised in interventional cardiology whilst also pursuing research interests in heart muscle disorders both in the clinic and basic science laboratory.

Fritz Melchers, PhD
Senior Research Group Leader, Max-Planck-Institut Berlin

Professor Melchers is Professor of Immunology at the University of Basel and serves on the Board of 4-Antibody as one of the co-founders. He is currently a senior research group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Infectious Biology in Berlin, Germany.
Prof. Melchers accepted this position after retiring from his role as Director of the Roche-funded Basel Institute for Immunology, which he held for more than 20 years. He is a leading expert in the field of Immunology, in particular B cell Immunology, and has authored more than 300 scientific publications and book chapters.
Before his tenure at the Basel Institute for Immunology, Prof. Melchers’s research career included positions at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California; the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Genetics in Berlin; and the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, Israel.
In addition to his extensive achievements in academic research, Prof. Melchers has served on a variety of scientific steering committees and advisory boards of academic institutions. More recently, he has served on the Boards of a number of biotech companies.

Gerhard Ries, PhD

Dr Ries is General Partner and co-founder of BioMedInvest, a Basel-based venture capital company. Previously, he was Partner at InterPharmaLink, a management consulting firm specializing in product portfolio and supply chain optimization for large pharmaceutical companies.
Dr Ries has several years of experience as Project Manager at McKinsey & Co., and as Business Development Manager at Novartis.
Before joining Novartis, he gained research experience in the Pharma/Biotech sector through positions at Ciba Geigy, Boehringer Mannheim, Harvard Medical School and the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry. Dr Ries holds MSc and PhD degrees in Molecular Biology from the University of Basel, and a diploma in Biotechnology from the Fachhochschule Weihenstephan.
In addition to his commitment to 4-Antibody, he holds Board positions in several other start-up companies.

Thomas von RĂ¼den, PhD

As a leading architect of phage technology utilisation in antibody drug discovery (as CSO and EVP BD) at MorphoSys) and of protein and antibody optimisation (as CEO of DIREVO), Dr von Rüden brings highly relevant commercial and scientific leadership experience to the board of 4-Antibody. Specifically, he successfully led the reshaping of DIREVO’s business strategy and operations culminating in the successful acquisition of the company by Bayer HealthCare AG. He built the antibody drug discovery platform at MorphoSys, played a leading role in reaching an essential patent litigation agreement, which directly led to a major expansion in the scope of MorphoSys’s business. He thus brings hard won, real world commercial R&D experience in the drug discovery sector to 4-Antibody. Most importantly, he also shares the company’s view of the value that can be added to a small but energetic and creative biotech team through the ability to provide strong motivational leadership.

Erich Rauschenbusch

Erich Rauschenbusch has been a partner of Grazia Equity GmbH since its inception, mainly in charge of technical affairs.
After studying mechanical engineering in Buenos Aires and Stuttgart, he worked for a German car manufacturer for three years upon graduation. During a one-year stay in the USA Erich Rauschenbusch worked in product development for American car companies, subsequently joining a German automotive supplier in 1964. In 1967 he became head of R&D, and from 1969 until 1976 he was a member of the executive management. In 1977, Erich Rauschenbusch founded his own automotive supplier company, of which he was managing director until 1998.

Joachim Rothe, PhD

Joachim (JR) Rothe PhD is a General Partner in LSP’s German office in Munich.
Before joining LSP as a general partner in early 2002, he was a principal at MPM Capital in Cambridge, MA, USA, and Managing Director of MPM Capital GmbH based in Munich. Previously, JR worked at McKinsey & Company where he was an engagement manager on assignments in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. He also spent time at Hoffmann-La Roche in Basel, Switzerland, where he worked in both the preclinical development department as well as in central research.
JR, a German native, has a Masters degree in biochemistry from the Free University in Berlin, and a PhD degree from the University of Freiburg. He has authored numerous articles in leading scientific publications, including Nature. Besides his commitment to 4-Antibody, he serves on the supervisory Boards of a number of start-up companies in Europe.
